Every day, the immune system protects the human body from billions of germs without us noticing. Only when it let us down do we pay attention to it. On the occasion of the Day of Immunology, the students of the elite study course together with young scientists from the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the University Hospital Erlangen present the secrets of human defence against pathogens.

On Saturday, July 6, 2019, interested people and children in particular were not only be able to find out about topics such as infection and vaccination, but were also be able to discover for themselves at hands-on stations how the immune system defends the human body against intruders from outside.

For the first time this year, the students of the elite course Integrated Immunology have been supported the PhD students of the DFG-funded IRTGTRR130 and GRK1660 Research Training Groups in planning, organizing and carrying out the day and have motivated passers-by at Hugenottenplatz in Erlangen to discover the world of the immune system.

The aim of the Europe-wide Immunology Day is to draw the attention of decision-makers from science and research to this field of medicine and biology, which is so important for public health. In addition, the public should gain insight into the current research in the field of immune defence and this year in particular be informed about the importance of vaccinations.
