Basic Preconditions
Qualification requirements
Relevant Bachelor’s degree with a grade average of 2.5 or better (or equivalent international grade) in Biology, Biochemistry, Life Sciences or a similar Bachelor degree.
International Bachelor degrees: The Bachelor degree must have been obtained at a higher education institution that is marked/rated with the status H+ in the anabin database, database of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs – Central Office for Foreign Education
The applicant should have completed or be currently completing a practical bachelor thesis in the field of molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology/virology or immunology or a research project with similar methodological expertise.
Please note: Internships in diagnostics and lab rotations without an assigned project are not accepted here.
GRE/GATE/GAT: Applicants with degrees from a country that is not a signatory state of the Lisbon Convention must submit a valid Graduate Record Examination (GRE- General) , a Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (Biomedical Engineering, Life Sciences or Biotechnology – India) or a GAT in Biological & Medical Sciences (Pakistan) test certificate.
The minimum scores for the application period 2026 are:
GRE (General Test): Percentile Score 50
GATE India (for Test Papers mentioned above): GATE Score of 600
GAT Pakistan (for Biological and Medical Sciences): Percentile Score 65
Language requirements
The required English level is “Vantage or upper intermediate” level (B2) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or an equivalent score in an internationally recognised test, eg. IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL.
Applicants whose native language is English do not need to submit any such proof. Applicants whose Bachelor’s degree was taught entirely in English can upload a confirmation from the university and do not have to provide any further proof.
Proof of German proficiency is not required. However, we strongly recommend non-German speaking students to attend German language classes during the MSc studies.
